Anthony Holt Genet & Berinthia Ruth Binnie
We operate Flamedaisy, a fulltime glassblowing, neon and lampworking studio based in Nelson, New Zealand. Anthony sweats away as the gaffer, and Berinthia as his assistant. All the unique works we produce are designed collaboratively.
We have been fulltime self employed glass artists for four years. We have worked as a team in glass for 9 years, and Anthonys experimentation with the medium dates back 15 years.
Most of our work is collected from retail galleries throughout New Zealand, the majority being acquired directly form our studio gallery. We are constantly evolving our work and pushing the boundaries of glass. We embrace the opportunities that exhibition invitations offer, however participating in exhibitions has been secondary to the daily reality of producing and retailing work.
Anthony first enjoyed his painful experiments with glass as a young man stripping paint off a house with a gas burner. Curiosity compelled him to melt some broken glass he foun in the garden, and that, coupled with a childhood fascination to ?oneday make lightbulbs? led to a self directed adventure into working with neon. An epiphany watching Robie Reddy blowing glass on the coast drew Anthony like a moth to the flame. A brief stint at Wanganui Polytechnic learning basic blowing skills gave life to the drive to become a self-taught glass-blower.
Berinthia has worked artistically form childhood, graduating from Otago School of Art as a Photography Major, but sculpture and painting were first loves. All learning in glass has been self taught.
Before committing to building his own studio, Anthony was privileged to assist some of New Zealands more experienced glass-blowers, and gain insight into the realitites of running a studio and producing glass full time. A nod goes to jenny Ross, Lynette Campbell and Keith Mahy. New zealands most senior and respected glass-blowers have also been incredibly generous in sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm whenever approached.
As owners of our own studio we have been able to extend this sharing of knowledge to: Angel Gardiner, Ben King, Lyndsay Patterson, Anita Hneypie, Yukio and Hiroko, Kyle Kraiter, Regan Milligan, Robert Reddy, Toki and Ian Waters and more than the odd foreign glass-blower that has swept by our studio.
Highlights in learning have come from workshops with Karen Hope, Gary Nash and Blaise Campbell.
We have participated in many group shows, and staged a small number of solo shows, culminating in a show at Gallery 33 in Wanaka, February 2003, when our exploration of themes of sea, sky and land came into focus with a series of works based on the dry and dramatic vistas of Central Otago. From this series we have embarked on an exciting adventure into exploring and exploiting the painterly qualities of hot glass.
