Richard?s love of art began as a geology student, drawing fossils for his PhD in Australia. Too creative to be scientific, the drawings were sent back. Later he submitted work to the Townsville Art Society in Australia which was accepted and started selling. On completion of his PhD he returned, with his wife, Joanna, to New Zealand.
In the late seventies, Richard?s brother Michael became interested in painting, and it was Richard who taught him the palette knife technique. Sparking off each other and exchanging ideas, they both became full time artists.
During the late 70?s and 80?s, Richard roamed the backcountry of New Zealand, capturing the light effects in the landscape. After visiting International Galleries, Richard was impressed with the works of Van Gogh, Monet, Perceval and Pollock. Starting with ?Quiet Places?, Richards work was gentle and subdued. Recent paintings are brighter, more sculpted, more expressive. Richard works from photographs, sketches and a lot from imagination.
Richard lives with his family in Rona Bay, Eastbourne Wellington. His son James, runs the Rona Galleries in Eastbourne.
