Finela works in a variety of mediums, often experimenting with new textures.
I prefer mixed media and use texture in my work. I nearly always draw attention to the surface of the artwork, which helps with the ambiguity of the 2 & 3 dimensionality of the piece. I like people to touch my work, and enjoy the texture on their fingers.
She uses a variety of styles which combine to form one paticular look that pervades all Finela's work.
I work in an abstract/naive style, with hints of realism. One of my greatest love is is Ethnic art. I love the ethnic art of Africa and the art styles of the Pacific Islands and Maori art.
Finela has training in commercial & fine arts, and has two degrees in the Social Sciences. She writes novels and poetry and has a special interest in the intricacies of the interweaving of the individual and society.
In many ways , I think of my art as a form of visual poetry. I like to paint something like a simple pot, and work into it, using in abstraction elements as metaphors: love, marriage and the whole universe.
Finela presently lives in Mount Maunganui. Her work still reflects her personal history of life in Africa, as well as the new influences of the various kinds of art of New Zealand and the South Pacific.
