A New Zealand Artist, now living in Queensland Australia, Michael Ponder has an unmistakeable style that continues to earn him both national and international success. Mike's paintings in oil and watercolour are keenly sought after, particularly his drover and cattlemen series. His oil paintings are bold, full of texture and colour, sometimes delicate with amazing detail and always a touch of red. They are painted with palette knives only.
Oil On Canvas is Mike Ponder's third art book. Mike's two previous art books Textured Colour, My Way, A Touch of Red, along with Oil On Canvas show some of the best examples of Mike's artworks.
Born in 1943, Mike Ponder was raised in Lower Hutt, NZ and educated at Hutt Valley High School where he first discovered he had a talent for art. However it was not until his early thirties that he took up painting seriously. He believes that his unique and individual style is due to being self taught.
Forestry wine and olive oil have also played an important role in Mike's career. For almost 30 years he has had forestry interests in the Marlborough Sounds and for many years as a member of the NZ Forestry Council he championed the cause of the small scale forest owner. In 1987 Di and Mike Ponder purchased 35ha of land on the outskirts of Blenheim and planted their first olives and grapes the following year. When Ponder Estate was sold in 2002, Mike and Di Ponder had a national and international reputation for their wines and were known as pioneers in the development of olive oil in NZ.
Currently Mike is working on publishing his novel.
