Lynden Stokes CV
1962 - Born in Hamilton, New Zealand
Childhood Years - While growing up, was continually learning about drawing and painting from parents, local artists Val and Trevor Stokes.
1976-1979 - Educated at Fairfield College, Hamilton. In 1978 scored top equal in School for School Certificate Art. In 1979 completed Art History as part of University Entrance courses. Decided not to pursue further practical art courses at school due to time involved in producing fine Artwork.
1980 - Commenced work at Trustbank
1982 - Left Trustbank to commence Civil Engineering Cadetship at Hamilton City Council. Commenced part time NZCE studies at this time through Waikato Technical Institute (WTI)
1982-1986 - Completed NZCE studies. From leaving school up to this time I generally completed only 1 painting each year, a detailed piece of say about 50 hours work.
1987 - I was married to Andrea in November. While honeymooning in Hawaii I was intrigued to see the detailed (sometimes Surrealist ) works of the local artists. Now that I wasn?t studying I found myself painting more frequently. This trend has increased and I generally produce more work each year.
1989 - WTI Graphic Art Course (part time). From this I learned I had a greater interest in illustrating than in Graphic Art.
1990 - Toured USA, UK and Europe. I was influenced by both contemporary and historic art I saw. Picturesque areas I visited (i.e. Provence, France) were to influence future landscape and surrealist landscapes.
1992 - Selected for hanging in Lion Breweries Art Awards, Cambridge
1992-1995 - Visited Australia several times. Visits to Art Galleries were always a priority and a great source of inspiration. Although only painting in spare time now producing several pieces of work each year of a standard I was satisfied with. Began selling work in 1994 and taking on one-off commissions
1994 - Finalist James Wallace Art Awards, Auckland
1995 - First solo exhibition at WSA Gallery, Hamilton in November
1996 - Continuing to paint to satisfy commission works and supply local outlet. Visited Australis and visited several Gold Coast Galleries. Participated in Chamber of Commerce group Art Exhibition at WSA Gallery in July. Began to explore possibility of placing work in Auckland in September.
1996-1999 - Continued painting a fairly low number of high detail surreal works as commissions and some gallery pieces. Due to the time consuming nature of the work sometimes less than half a dozen pieces a year completed.
1999 - Sceondf half of this year dedicated to painting automotive art for car industry clients and surreal pieces for the advertising industry (jeans).
1999-2002 - Continued painting a low number of high detail surreal works as commissions and some gallery pieces. Exhibited in galleries in Hamilton, Auckland, Whitianga and overseas for the first time at Sanctuary Cove, Queensland.
2003 - A lifestyle change resulted in more time being available to paint so as to increase production and indulge more creativity in my life! Continuing in a variety of styles with the main interests being cars and surrealism involving marine subjects. A continuing demand for surreal commissions is great but time consuming and can make it difficult to maintain a profile in galleries.
