Julia Henderson was born in London and immigrated to New Zealand in 1989. She has a Bsc and PhD and currently lives in Devonport, Auckland. She has traveled extensively within the South Pacific and further afield. Over the past 10 years she has been able to concentrate on her life-long interest in art. Throughout this time she has regularly attended classes and workshops, primarily using pastels and acrylics.
Moving to New Zealand was the catalyst to begin a new career in art. Julia was eager to express her first experiences of the vibrancy and colour of the South Pacific and this enthusiasm has continued. Although each of the islands is unique and individual, she strives to convey the ?essence? of Polynesia which they all share. The pure pigments in pastels have a luminance and freshness that seems to suit this aim. They also effectively combine painting and drawing.
In addition to Pacific themes, Julia has recently begun exploring other personal influences, also using different techniques within the pastel medium in order to shift emphasis. Thus form, tone, mood or colour relationships are differently explored.
Julia has participated in a variety of exhibitions, group and solo and won a number of awards. She finds teaching rewarding and enjoyable and has been involved in many community art projects. She also undertakes commissions. A winner of numerous awards, her work has twice appeared on the cover of the Auckland telephone directory (1995 & 2000).
A master pastellist of the Waikato Pastel Society, she has been invited to judge several art competitions. Her work is represented in private, corporate and local government collection in New Zealand and in private collections overseas. Recent publications include ?Australian Artist? magazine, ?12 Contemporary New Zealand Artists? calendar, ?Metro? magazine, the book ? Art New Zealand Today? and the cover image of ? Myths and Legends of the Pacific.
